Huizenga was born in a suburb of Chicago in 1937 and moved to Florida in his teens. After his parents divorced, he lived with his mother, who drove a truck and worked at a gas station after school and weekends to help with expenses. After one pass through the army and college, he left school to work with a family friend who had a garbage collection company. Within two years, he bought his own truck and started their own. This eventually became Waste Management Inc.
Huizenga was legendary for his hard work driving the truck from 2:30 am until noon, then spend the day knocking on doors and introducing himself to improve the new business. The company grew to 40 trucks at the local, then merged with another company in Chicago to form Waste Management Inc.
