Germán Larrea Mota-Velasco was born on July 8, 1941, is one of the richest people in Mexico, is CEO of Grupo Mexico inherited from his father, which is the largest mining corporation in Mexico and the third largest producer of copper in the world.


Ferrocarril Mexicano (Ferromex), the division of the railway company, operates the largest fleet of trains. The company was founded by Raul Antonio Escobedo and Larrea in 1988. After the government of Carlos Salinas declared the state mining company was bankrupt, Larrea main copper mines bought Mexicana de Cananea and Nacozari (cities in the state of Sonora). He has also purchased numerous mineral deposits, including coal mines in the state of Coahuila.


In 2000, Grupo Mexico was responsible for 87.5 percent of Mexico's copper production and is the third largest copper producer in the world.


In 2004, Grupo Mexico also bought a controlling stake in Southern Peru Copper Corporation. Grupo Mexico acquired 54.2% stake in Southern Peru Copper Corporation from ASARCO LLC, a mining company operating in the United States also participates in Televisa
